High School Athletic Director
Jim Melton completed his 19th year as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Towns County High School before resigning at the end of the 2016-17 season. Coach Melton graduated from Towns County High School, attended Young Harris College for 2 years, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle School Education. Coach Melton received his Master’s Degree in Education from Piedmont College and received his Ed.S Degree in Administration from Lincoln Memorial University.
Before becoming the Head Coach at TCHS, Coach Melton served as the assistant coach for 3 years. Coach Melton has been blessed to coach some great athletes and excellent young ladies at TCHS which has led to his overall record of 347-204. Towns County Women’s Basketball teams have won 4 Region Championships (2009, 2011, 2012, 2013), made State Tournament appearances in 15 of 19 years, played in 2 Elite Eight (2009, 2014), and played in 3 Final Fours (2000, 2008, 2013) during Coach Melton’s tenure. Coach Melton has had 9 seasons of 20 or more wins and 4 season with 25 or more wins. Coach Melton has had the honor of being named Region Coach of the Year 4 times. He has had well over a dozen players continue their basketball careers at the college level. Coach Melton was selected to be the Head Coach at the GACA North JR Girls All-Star Game in 2013.
Coach Melton currently serves as the Athletic Director at TCHS. He is also serves as the Assistant Principal at Towns County High School. Coach Melton is married to Christie Melton for 10 years. They have one daughter, Kaila (24) a 2013-14 graduate of TCHS, a 2017-18 graduate of Young Harris College majoring in education, Kaila taught 8th grade math at Rabun County Middle School and coached 7th grade girls basketball for 2 years, ministry in now Kaila's callling and she currently serves as the Area Representative for FCA serving Towns, Union, and Rabun counties, and one son, Chase (18) who recently graduated from TCHS and is a freshman at the Univeristy of Georgia - Go Dawgs!!. The Melton’s are members of Macedonia Baptist Church.
